Tempting bargains and discounts as far as the eye can see. When the clock strikes midnight on the dawn of Black Friday, bargain hunters are ready to pounce. Unfortunately, on Black Friday, far too little thought is given to the environment, animals and people. Which is why businesses are increasingly adopting Green Friday schemes as a more responsible alternative to Black Friday. These events champion less consumption and a more conscientious, sustainable approach to shopping. And so, backpack pioneer and sleeping bag expert deuter is leading by example.
This year, it is donating 10% of revenue from its online sales from November 25 through 27 to a select European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) project. The project is called Strengthening Human-Elephant Coexistence and is in Ghana, Africa. The financial support from deuter will help improve and restore habitat for the endangered African forest elephant. It will be used to plant trees and to educate over 5000 people on the benefits of these elephants to the Kakum Conservation Area’s ecosystem. In addition, approximately 500 farmers are being encouraged to use better farming techniques and practices to combat crop raiding by elephants, thereby reducing human-elephant conflict (e.g., chili-soaked cloths on fences).
The EOCA project is just one small part of deuter’s sustainability strategy. The mountain sports brand’s vision is much broader. Under the maxim “Together for 360° Responsibility“, the deuter Promise is a holistic, integrated strategy for doing business more sustainably. In addition to making more of their products with sustainable materials and using sustainable manufacturing practices, high quality is a top priority. Should a deuter product, after many years of rigorous use, begin to show signs of wear and tear however, the German brand offers its customers a lifelong Repair Service.
In addition, this fall/ winter, deuter has embarked on a road trip to various cities across Germany, mending backpacks directly in retail stores. The final stop on the deuter Promise Tour is at the deuter Shop at its headquarters in Gersthofen, on 25.11.2022. Customers are welcome to drop by any time and have their deuter products mended. deuter views this as a great way to make their customers happy, by giving their favorite piece of gear a new lease of life, but also as a way of extending the usable lifetime of their products and, in so doing, protecting the environment.
