Electric cars in demand in the USA

In the third quarter of 2024, almost 350,000 new electric cars were registered in the USA. This is eleven percent more than in the same period of the previous year. At the end of 2023, there were almost 42 million electric vehicles (passenger cars) on the road worldwide. Most of them in China, followed by the USA and Germany. Norway accounts for the largest share of newly registered e-vehicles. A full 90.2 percent of new registrations there were electric cars in the first quarter of 2024. According to forecasts, the total number of e-vehicles in the world is set to grow to around 226 million by 2030. In Germany, sales of environmentally friendly vehicles are weakening due to the environmental bonus that no longer exists. The driving force behind the growth in electric cars is and remains China. More than one million e-vehicles were sold in the first quarter of 2024.

The lithium-ion battery is still the heart of electric cars, and this will not change in the foreseeable future, according to the experts. Raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, but also nickel, zinc and copper are needed in the automotive industry. But what about hydrogen cars? As recently announced by a well-known Munich-based car manufacturer, series production of a hydrogen car with a fuel cell is due to start in 2028. By then, the necessary infrastructure should also have undergone significant further development. This is because hydrogen is to be part of a climate-neutral energy mix. Fossil fuels are to be saved, particularly in industry, for example in steelworks. Large quantities of platinum are required for electrolysis.
