bilacon offers analysis of Bisphenol A (BPA) and other Bisphenols in food and food contact materials

At the end of December, the European Union published Regulation (EU) 2024/3190. This new regulation governs the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) as well as other bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives that have been classified as hazardous. The provisions specifically apply to materials and articles that come into contact with food.

Key aspects of the new regulation at a glance:

  • The use of BPA and its harmful derivatives in the production of food contact materials is banned within the EU, with only a few exceptions.
  • Transition periods of 18 to 36 months apply.
  • The specific migration limit (SML) of 0.05 mg/kg, as per Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, remains in place. However, as no validated analytical method currently exists for quantifying levels in relation to the tolerable daily intake (TDI), the use of BPA in food contact materials will be completely prohibited.
  • Exceptions apply to polysulfone resins used in the manufacture of separation membranes for filtration technology, as well as for surface coatings of large containers (>1000 liters) and pipelines—provided that no migration into food can be detected.
  • Bisphenol S has been classified as toxic to reproduction, and further assessments by ECHA are expected.

bilacon Now Offers Bisphenol Analysis with a New LOD

In response to the new regulation, bilacon is currently validating a highly sensitive analytical method using LC-MS/MS at its locations in Berlin, Rotterdam, and Zagreb. This method achieves a detection limit (LOD) of at least 0.5 to 1 µg/kg for BPA, BPS, BPF, and BPAF. This enables us to meet the new regulatory requirements and provide our customers with reliable analysis of BPA and other bisphenols in food and food contact materials.

Our experts utilize state-of-the-art chromatography technology to ensure that manufacturers and retailers comply with the new legal requirements.
