TÜV SÜD expands test laboratory in Frankfurt am Main

The expansion strengthens TÜV SÜD‘s position as a leading provider of independent testing and certification services. Founded in 1990 with 16 employees the Frankfurt laboratory has grown to nearly 100 employees and is a central part of TÜV SÜD‘s global network, offering a wide range of testing services for various industries. Current services within the „Electrical / Mechanical“ area of expertise include comprehensive testing of electrical and mechanical tools, electrical components, including cable reels, multiple sockets and installation accessories, electrical and mechanical cleaning equipment, and high-pressure and pumping systems. The range of services offered by the „Tool Usability“ area of expertise includes tool testing and life cycle testing simulations. Frankfurt is also an important location for special „Battery/accumulator testing“ and chemical testing.
Expanded testing capacity to meet growing demands
TÜV SÜD is setting new standards in the field of electromobility: the laboratory is now able to test car charging plugs and evaluate aspects such as electrical safety, mechanical strength and weather resistance. In addition, the new laboratory can perform crash tests on charging plugs and other components to ensure their durability and longevity.
Another milestone is the introduction of performance testing for small batteries. These tests will initially focus on basic functional analysis, but will be expanded to include full safety and Page 2 of 4 performance assessments in the second half of the year. Similarly, the testing capacity for power tools has been significantly expanded to provide manufacturers with an even more comprehensive assessment of the quality, durability and safety of their products.
A further highlight is the ability to determine the biogenic carbon content in materials. These analyses provide companies with proof of the use of renewable raw materials and help them to implement sustainable production strategies. At the same time, the testing infrastructure for food contact materials has been expanded to ensure that packaging and other materials meet the highest safety standards and do not release harmful substances into food.
Also worth mentioning is the new capacity for testing welding fume filter systems, which can be subjected to a comprehensive performance evaluation and will soon also be certifiable. This is TÜV SÜD’s response to the growing demands for air pollution control and occupational safety in industrial environments.
Advanced chemical testing for safety and sustainability
With the expansion of its Frankfurt laboratory, TÜV SÜD is now able to offer an even wider range of chemical testing services to ensure that products meet current regulatory requirements. Experts conduct tests for harmful substances and help to ensure compliance with applicable regulations such as REACH, POP, RoHS and CLP in order to minimise potential risks. In addition, the company awards recognised test marks such as the GS safety mark and the „Tested for Harmful Substances“ mark, which build confidence in products.
A particular focus is on PFAS analysis, with standardised tests for substances such as PFOS, PFOA, C9-C14 PFCAs and PFHxS. TÜV SÜD’s extensive experience in testing for per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) ensures that its clients‘ products meet current and future environmental and safety standards. This reduces the risk of legal actions and strengthens confidence in the manufacturers’ brands.
Services also include chemical analysis for the reliable identification and targeted analysis of substances. TÜV SÜD supports its clients with chemical analysis to ensure the quality and safety of their products.
Comprehensive testing expertise for all industries
In addition to these new services, TÜV SÜD has been offering electrical and mechanical safety and electromagnetic compatibility testing in Frankfurt for many years. The expansion of the laboratory means that even more industries can now benefit from its comprehensive testing expertise. TÜV SÜD supports manufacturers and companies with conformity assessments according to international standards and helps them to overcome market access barriers. This also includes services in the area of risk assessment, durability testing and certification services for various product categories.
Open Lab Day: insights into the future of testing
The expansion of the laboratory was celebrated today with an exclusive Open Lab Day, offering a guided tour of the new testing facilities. Visitors were able to see live demonstrations of products being tested under realistic conditions. A particular highlight was the demonstration of the engine dynamometer tests, as well as the welding fume and filter test.
In addition to the technical insights, there were a number of exciting technical presentations. TÜV SÜD experts provided information on current challenges and solutions in the areas of battery risks and how to avoid them, as well as on the latest developments in packaging and food contact materials (FCM). The Open Lab Day concluded with a networking event, providing an ideal platform for industry representatives, TÜV SÜD experts and other specialists to exchange ideas.
Walter Reithmaier, CEO of TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH, said: „By expanding our laboratory in Frankfurt, we are responding to growing demand for product testing and certification. Our new testing capacities will set new standards in safety, sustainability and performance. We look forward to supporting our customers with state-of-the-art testing technology and professional expertise.“ The investment in the laboratory underlines TÜV SÜD’s commitment to supporting companies worldwide with cutting-edge testing services and driving innovative developments in product testing.
